(1744 - 1802) Charleston native John Mathews was a lawyer and delegate to the Continental Congress from 1778 to 1781, where he endorsed the Articles of Confederation on behalf of South Carolina. He was elected the 33rd governor of South Carolina by the state legislature and served from 1782 to 1783.
