(ca. 1500-1542) Hernando de Soto was a Spanish explorer and conquistador who explored in South Carolina.
(1617-1675) Hilton Head Island is named after Captain William Hilton, who in 1663, identified a headland near the entrance to Port Royal Sound, which he named “Hilton’s Head” after himself.
(mid to late 1600s-1711) John Lawson was a British explorer, naturalist, and writer who explored the Carolina backcountry and published the first natural historical survey of the area in the book A New Voyage
(fl.1560) Juan Pardo was a Spanish explorer who built missions and forts in the Southeast in 1566 and 1567.
(1520-1565) Jean Ribault was a French navigator who led an expedition to the New World in 1562 that founded the outpost of Charlesfort on Paris Island.
