Laurens County and its county seat, Laurens, were named for Revolutionary War leader Henry Laurens (1724-1792).

Greenville County

The origins of the name Greenville County are uncertain, but the county was probably named for Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene (1742-1786) or for an early resident, Isaac Green.

Oconee County

Oconee County takes its name from a Native American word meaning "water eyes of the hills." It was formed in 1868 from Pickens District, and the county seat is Walhalla.

Saluda County

Saluda County was named for the Saluda River, which forms one of its borders. The county was established in 1895 from part of Edgefield County, and the county seat is the town of Saluda.

South Carolina State Picnic Cuisine
