Rebecca Motte
Rebecca Motte was a widower and landowner along the Congaree River who graciously allowed Francis Marion and other Patriot soldiers to set fire to her plantation home when the British took command of the house.
South Carolina Counties
Allendale County
Allendale County and its county seat of Allendale were named for the Allen family, one of whose members, Paul Allen, was the town's first postmaster.
Chesterfield County
Chesterfield County was named for the English statesman Lord Chesterfield (1694-1773).
Fairfield County
The origin of Fairfield's name is not known, but local legend attributes it to a remark by Lord Cornwallis about the "fair fields" of the area. The county was formed in 1785 as a part of the Camden District.
Lancaster County
Lancaster County and its county seat of Lancaster were named for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

South Carolina State Butterfly
The beautiful Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) butterfly was designated the official Butterfly of the State by Act Number 319 of 1994. The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail can be seen in deciduous woods, along streams, rivers and wooded swamps, and in towns and cities throughout South Carolina.
