Robert Smalls


Robert Smalls was born a slave on April 5, 1839, in Beaufort. During the Civil War, he hijacked a Confederate steamship, disguised himself as a white captain, and sailed to Union safety. He later became a captain in the US Navy and a representative in the US Congress.
