This lesson contains information & hands-on activities where K-2 students will be learning about farmers, agriculture, and agribusiness. Our goals with this lesson are 1) To help students develop an awareness that farmers provide a variety and abundance of foods we need to develop and maintain healthy lifestyles, and 2) to help students explore general facts of SC agriculture and agribusiness.

All about Food Plants 3-5

This lesson contains information & hands on activities for teaching grades 3-5 about whole food plants, specifically fruits & vegetables. Our goal for this lesson is to help children understand why it is important to eat fruits & vegetables that they can get from supermarkets, farms & gardens close to where they live.

Allendale: Altered Geography

Students will be introduced to Allendale, SC, as they learn about its prosperity in the 1950s and its economic loss in the 1990s. Students will determine how the transportation routes between the northern United States through South Carolina to Florida impacted this area causing it to become one of the poorest sections of the South Carolina. Information will then be examined to determine ways to improve the prosperity of the area today. The lesson concept can be modified to be taught in such a way as to focus on any South Carolina County.

American Symbols

The teacher will pass out symbol picture cards and talk to the students about each symbol.

This site was designed to offer basic information on South Carolina's barrier islands for both educators and non-educators alike. It offers background content and images for educators to use in teaching marine science. 

An introduction to slave narratives: Harriet Jacobs A Life of a Slave Girl

In this lesson, students will learn about the life experiences of slaves in the United States during the 1800s by reading the story of a North Carolina slave woman who eventually escaped.

An Introduction to the South Carolina Atlas

This lesson is designed to serve as an introduction to the new South Carolina Atlas. It will review the characteristics of the several types of maps contained therein which the students have previously studied. It will assist the student in identifying each map as to type. It will finally, give the student some practical work in becoming more familiar with the contents.

Analyzing a Civil War Photograph

This lesson utilizes a primary source and provides students with insight of some of artillery types used during the Civil War. Students will be able to analyze a photograph for content and describe different elements in a photograph.

Anthony and Helen Grant

This activity enlightens first graders on the lives of Helen Nelson Grant and Anthony Grant. Then, they make brochures about laws citizens follow.

Archaeology Acrostic

In this lesson, students write free-verse acrostic poems about archaeology using the letters of the word "archaeology" to begin each line. After proofreading the poems are recopied or typed and illustrated and then mounted on construction paper for display. 

At a Glance: The Landform Regions of South Carolina and their Counties

This lesson is designed to help students become more familiar with the landform regions of South Carolina, those areas of South Carolina with similar economic activities, life styles, and who share similar landscapes. The lesson is also designed to help students become more familiar with the location of counties within the landform regions.

Attack of the Hunley

Students, who are already familiar with the overall story of the H.L. Hunley, will use class discussion to arrive at a deeper understanding of the hardships and dangers faced by the crew, and especially the effects of weather factors on the little submarine's mission. Note: Lesson starts on page 59.

Battle of Cowpens – Reader’s Theater Script for Classroom

The student will be able to:

• Identify key people in the battle and in the Revolutionary War
• Summarize the immediate and long term outcomes of the battle
• Summarize the role of geography in the battle
• Identify the effects of Morgan’s leadership style
• Summarize backcountry attitudes towards the British (in late 1780/early 1781)

Battling Through the Revolutionary War

Students will learn about the major battles of the Revolutionary war through the Internet and streaming videos. Each student will research a battle from the Revolutionary War and write a newspaper article describing who, what, when, where, and why the battle occurred. 

Beatrice Taylor McKnight

The student will write an acrostic poem about Beatrice Taylor McKnight and all of her accomplishments to overcome the conditions of her daily life.
