George McDuffie

(1790–1851)  McDuffie, the son of John and Jane McDuffie was born in Georgia and came to South Carolina to attend South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina).  He settled in Anderson County to practice law and later in a law firm in Edgefield. Eventually he moved to Sumter County. McDuffie married Mary Rebecca Singleton and they had one daughter. McDuffie was politically active serving as a member of the SC House of Representatives, US House of Representatives, US Senate, and SC Governor.  He sustained injury to his spine fighting several duels while serving in Congress, and he suffered from depression. He is buried in Sumter.
