This unit focuses on the causation of sectional conflict along with the comparison of historical events with those that take place in other periods of U.S. History. Students will analyze the problematic conditions arising from the dispute over slavery and relate events stemming from the 1850’s with those happening today along with evaluating arguments, claims, and beliefs to interpret and synthesize the information to make inferences and draw conclusions. Additionally, students will evaluate how to change negative traditions to provide social reform to society. These thinking skills are in line with the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
