Frieda Mitchell was a civil rights and social justice activist from Beaufort County.
Richard Rowland Kirkland:
Born in Flatrock township near Camden, Kirkland is remembered as a Civil War hero. Kirkland helped opposing forces during battle by crossing enemy lines and providing water to injured soldiers.
Charles M. Duke Jr.
Colonel Charles Moss Duke, Jr. is a retired USAF Brigadier General and former NASA astronaut and engineer.

Sumter County
Sumter County and its county seat, the city of Sumter, were named for Revolutionary War general Thomas Sumter (1734-1832), a resident of the area.
Edgefield County
The origin of the name Edgefield is not clear, although it is usually described as "fanciful." The county was formed in 1785 as part of the Ninety Six District.
Lancaster County
Lancaster County and its county seat of Lancaster were named for Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Spartanburg County
Spartanburg County and its county seat, the city of Spartanburg, were named for the Spartan Regiment, a local militia unit that fought in the Revolutionary War.

The Richardson Waltz was designated as the official State Waltz by Act Number 389 of 2000. The waltz had been created and preserved for generations by members of the Richardson family.
